Mapping distribution of thermal plumes in rivers
By means of thermal data acquisition, it is possible to monitor the distribution of warm water dumped in rivers and canals by industrial plants

APPLICATION: Water management and environment
ABSTRACT:
In the past, EUROSENSE executed a broad variety of projects related to the water management and environment domain (contaminant and thermal pollution). Past experiences have been acquired on the canal Ghent-Terneuzen (BE), Sambre and Meuse River (Namur, BE), Grensmaas (BE/NL) and the nuclear power plant of Doel (BE).
For our Dutch client RIZA, Eurosense has mapped the distribution of thermal plumes in the receiving water generated by power plants and other factories that dumping their warm waste water in rivers and channels. This was done with the multi spectral scanner type Daedalus ADDS-1240-160 of Eurosense mounted in our Aircraft. Flying 500 meters above the area’s gives a resolution of 1 meter with a precision of 0,2 degrees Celsius. Several sites have been mapped including the area of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, river the Maas and other locations. 6 flights were needed to accomplish all the locations.
